Bletchley Blooming!

Milton Keynes Model Railway Society (MKMRS) members joined forces with volunteers from Network Rail’s Milton Keynes offices on Monday 22 July to bring some colour to the daily commute for people travelling from Bletchley station.

The volunteers turned a derelict flower bed in Bletchley station forecourt into an attractive garden which looks great for passengers and supports biodiversity by encouraging bees and other wildlife to visit the plants.

The Friends of Bletchley Station, a group formed by MKMRS and which works to improve the passenger environment at Bletchley station, organised the day with friends and colleagues from Network Rail with support also coming from London Northwestern Railway.

The Friends team is part of the Marston Vale Community Rail Partnership and has been active at Bletchley station for over two years now. It has already succeeded in brightening up platform areas with flower planters and a display of winter and summer plants.

Network Rail encourages its staff to take part in volunteering activities and London Northwestern Railway is looking to increase the number of station adoption groups across it’s network.

Friends of Bletchley Station Secretary, Ian Bartlett, said:

‘Our Friends group Chairman, Terry Silver, initiated this project but sadly passed away very recently. I am delighted that we have turned Terry’s vision into reality and cannot be more grateful to the team from Network Rail for all their hard work. The garden looks fantastic and shows what a difference a few hours of volunteering can make.’

Andrew Manning, Senior Communications Manager at Network Rail, said:

‘Network Rail encourages staff to help out in their local communities. They’re also committed to making a difference to passengers’ every day experience of the railway. The project at Bletchley enabled us to work with passionate local volunteers and create a lovely flower garden, which we hope will brighten passengers’ journeys every day.’

Can you help us..?

The Friends of Bletchley Station are always on the lookout for new members. If you can spare some time and would like to help water and maintain our station plants, the Friends group would love to hear from you.
